If you’re a new parent who wants to gain a better understanding of the stages of tooth development or you’re an experienced parent who just wants a clearer picture of the process, let our pediatric dentists at Cool Kid Dental provide some help. Here is a basic rundown of the stages of tooth development:

Stage 1: Development in Utero

Did you know that tooth development begins before your baby is even born? The first stage begins in utero, as the baby’s teeth begin to develop underneath their gums around the second month of pregnancy. The teeth continue to develop until the baby is born.

Stage 2: Eruption Through the Gums

The second stage of tooth development starts right around your baby reaching 6 months. This is when your baby begins teething, as their teeth begin to erupt through their gums. You’re likely aware from prior experience or through word of mouth that this can be an uncomfortable process for babies and they will experience some irritation. Teething toys can help ease some of the discomfort for your baby. You may also choose to rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger or cloth.

Stage 3: Molars Begin to Erupt

Between 6 and 12 months, your baby’s third stage of tooth development will take place. This is when their molars begin to erupt, and this is when it’s important for you to be diligent about cleaning your baby’s teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. Your baby’s molars will allow them to get used to chewing and breaking down food.

Stage 4: Full Baby Teeth Come In

The time between your child being 1 and 3 years old is when the fourth stage of tooth development takes place. This is when their full set of baby teeth comes in. As your child gets closer to the 3 years old, it’s important that you begin to teach them how to brush their teeth and supervise them until they can properly do it on their own.

Stage 5: Time for Permanent Teeth

The fifth stage of tooth development involves your child’s baby teeth falling out and permanent teeth beginning to erupt in their place. This occurs between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. It’s paramount that parents continue to encourage healthy dental habits as this process continues.
